About Cheerbrook Business Consultants

My experience spans a lifetime in the licensed hospitality sector, working at various levels. I began as a wine shop manager and progressed to Managing Director of a major pub company. In addition, I have owned a pub business and successfully run a consultancy firm for many years. Below is a brief summary of my experience.

C.B.C is owned and led by Harvey Nurse FBII

Overall responsibility for the managed house division whilst implementing and rolling out a new retail service agreement.

Based in Warrington I led a small, dedicated and highly experienced management team, I managed 44 community pubs in North Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cumbria and Stoke. We operated using a Retail Service Agreement, I was responsible for buying sites and helped lead the successful sale of the business.

Here I managed an estate of leased and tenanted pubs with a turnover of £15 million and a maximum of 320 pubs and 7 Business Development Managers, working with a supporting team of estates managers, surveyors and cellar inspectors.

I was responsible for maximising profitability and beating tough targets by acquiring pubs, making individual capital investments, and managing the churn of the estate, all while maintaining tight cost controls.

I represented the company at both BBPA (British Beer & Pub Association) and BII (British Innkeepers Institute) meetings and was involved in debates and steering committees on important and influential issues effecting the Pub, restaurant & leisure industry.

I was at the forefront of the drive to install a food module into the tenanted pub estate.

My main contract during this period was Select Service Partner Group PLC (SSP)

This was a 24-month contract where I worked alongside the marketing director as part of a small team. We were wholly responsible for developing the concept, drinks range and food offer for new branded bars and rolling them out across British and Irish railway stations and airports.

We rolled out three new brands across 9 sites in under 2 years, including a Craft Beer bar concept called Beerhouse which achieved major press coverage and praise from beer critics.

Owner and operator of small pub company with a mix of freehold and leasehold sites. The pubs are traditional community pubs driven by cask ale and craft beers, sports and entertainment. The pubs were run by mangers on a early version of what is now known as a Retails Service Agreement, now widely used by many national pub companies.

Team Work Discussion

I worked with Harvey during my time as Brand Director at the Select Service Partner Group PLC (SSP). He was a consultant to the business on a 24-month contract and worked as part of a small team who were responsible for developing the concept, drinks range and food offer for new branded bars and rolling them out across UK & Ireland railway stations and airports.

During his time working with us, Harvey helped roll out three new brands across 9 sites in under 2 years, including a Craft Beer bar concept called Beerhouse which achieved major press coverage and praise from renowned beer critics.

No problem was too much for Harvey and he showed an ability to be able to work alongside the SSP operators but also the Rail and Airport teams, where his real skill was to be able to deal with people at all levels of management. This included mentoring and coaching the new teams at ‘shop level’ as the new concepts and ranges were rolled out.

Harvey’s ability to evaluate a business and work alongside people on a one to one or group basis, his experience gained at all levels of management in his corporate life, and running his own business made him a really ‘good signing’ for us.
